This is a really good looking 1977 BMW 320 that I went to take a look at. The interior really does look as good as it does in the pictures and you can tell that the guy really cared for this car. He told me the fuel pump went bad (suprise, suprise) and he had to park it because it just didn't work as his DD anymore. I'm a little bit miffed about the lack of a 3rd pedal, but this might be the perfect car to start my evil plans. So what do you think NPoCP?
PS. He's asking $1800, but I think I can get him to at least $1500 after talking to him.

English may be a second language. Take that into account when negotiating.
Certainly inexpensive for a project car though.

Steelies and white letter tires.
'Murica, Fuck yeah!
( I thought it was an 80's Malibu at first glance.)

BMW E21s are certainly better choices than E30s since they have less "perceived value" and aren't priced as unreasonably.

It is definitely his second language. The story behind it is that he bought it for himself when he immigrated from Colombia in the early 80s, using the income from his fancy new engineering job. He drove it back and forth to work until the early 90s when it became his weekend car. Now that he's getting up there in age, he just wants to see it go to someone who can get it running again. I already talked to him about the price and he hasn't had a whole lot of interest in the car so we're just a handshake away from $1500 being a reality.

Agreed. I like the looks more and there's a lot less people overvaluing their cars. I can't believe what people are trying to get for the "economy" engined versions of the e30.

That's pretty awesome. How far away from it are you? Hopefully it shows well in person and doesn't fall apart on the drive/tow home!

He's about 40 minutes away, so it wasn't bad for me to go take a look at it. I'm probably going to trailer it back to my place. It's been sitting too long to try and fix it and drive it home; I wouldn't trust brakes, shocks, etc. that have been sitting for over 10 years.

NP. Jump on it!

Check for rust. If it had been sitting for a while it could be in unexpected places. Check the spare tire well, around and under the battery, strut towers, frame rails.
All that said it looks like a nice find. You can always to a manual swap down the road.

I didn't want to kick tires too much when I went to see it since I told him I didn't have any intention of buying that day, but what I did look at seemed straight and rust free. I'll need to do a more thorough check (thanks for pointing out problem areas) when I go back.
How labor intensive would a manual swap be? It will probably end up with a modernized power plant anyway, so I would be in the market to change out the tranny as well.

Not really too sure for an e21. I know for the 2002 having an auto chassis is actually desirable because it has a larger transmission tunnel. The same might be true on the e21 since it has basically the same motor.
You can probably find some more info here or here

Thanks, man. You've been extremely helpful.

NP. e21's are sweet! That interior sure does look nice. I'm guessing a manual swap shouldn't be too bad. A good friend of mine manual swapped his e30, and it wasn't too bad. This should be the same difficulty, if not simpler. Go get it!
